Transitions

Transitions can be one of the most engaging social experiences for a child.  They can also be an area of our programs or daily life that throw up the most challenges.

Being prepared, having games/songs/activities linked with the transition, will make it a lot easier.  Warning a child or group of children that a transition is going to occur will also reduce challenging behaviours.  Notice provides the child with an opportunity to plan for ending what they are currently engaged in, and processing the need to move to the next element of the routine.

Some beautiful transition games and ideas are provided on the www.challengingbehavior.org website for your enjoyment.  Also consider what you know will interest the children in your service.

Be aware that persistent challenging behaviour during transition times, may indicate that the child is unsure how to 'be' in that situation - perhaps requiring the directions visually and systematically taught.

Providing one to one direction, teaching until the child has 'got it!', and providing many opportunities to practice the various elements expected within any transition will support the reduction of the challenges.
